Westcott 2331 28-Inch Apollo Flash Kit (Black/Silver) Review

I'm new to studio lighting and wanted to try out a softbox with my existing gear: Canon 5D mk II, 580EX II speedlight, and Pocketwizard triggers (mini TT1 on the camera body and Flex TT5 on the speedlight) I've only opened the stand and softbox indoors on carpet, but the base of the stand is light, and though wide, can wobble a little on carpet. I haven't yet tried on a solid floor to see if the wobble effect is still there or not. The advertised adapter head for the speedlight grips the hotshoe mount very nicely. I attached the base of the TT5 connected to my 580EX II to the light stand's adapter with no problems. The softbox itself was easy to open and setup (just like an umbrella) as advertised. It was a little tricky to fit the softbox into the umbrella/hotshoe adapter after I got the softbox open, but was definitely manageable.

The light is sectioned into three parts (much like a 3-section tripod) that allows a photographer to have the softbox up to about 8 feet in height. At that height, I would've liked to be able to play around with the angle that the softbox was facing (I wanted to angle the face of the softbox down a bit), but this was very limited because the softbox stem is connected to the adapter head, which can freely tilt up and down to 180 degrees if wanted, but because you have to fit the softbox itself over the light stand, the opening that you fit the softbox through (even if open) really prevents free movement of the adapter head and thus the angle of the softbox. I might have been able to adjust the angle to be downward facing, but I was afraid to do damage to the edge of the actual softbox itself, made of a nylon-like material.

The front of the softbox is sewn in on one side of the recessed frame, and on the other three edges, you would have to seal it off using the attached Velcro strips. As previously mentioned, zippers here would have made the softbox face easier to open/close and cleaner looking, but this was not a deal breaker for me as a beginner. I faced the speedlight towards the back of the silver-lined softbox and got very good/even indirect lighting coming out of the front of the softbox. In that regard, I've achieved my purpose for purchasing this light set.

All in all, despite the shortcomings listed, I'd recommend it for starters.
