The Sightmark Ghost Hunter 5x60 Night Vision Monocular impressed me from very first time I used it. This was my first experience of night vision and it exceeded my expectations. The unit is well constructed and easy to use, on top of that it's affordable.

Performance is great with the large objective lens, maximizing light gathering, along with the optional use of the IR illuminator for situations when no natural light is available. During a full moon, the Ghost Hunter performs like a champ, without the need to use the IR illuminator. Looking through the monocular makes it seem like it's daytime again, objects are lit up all around. Targets of my gaze were easily seen from 5 to 100 yards away with the 5x magnification and focused on with the adjustable objective lens for great clarity. Even in complete darkness, the Ghost Hunter's attached illuminator acts like a bright flashlight, while not actually disturbing anyone/anything since the IR beam is not visible. The IR beam also gives the glowing affect to an animals eyes, easily giving away their position.

Any downsides to the Ghost Hunter can be attributed to the generation 1 tube that it utilizes, which is just a fact of life when dealing with night vision. Clarity and light amplification are less than the higher generations, but the cost is one tenth of those higher generation units.
