There are two versions of this lens. The latest has an "R" suffix. The differences from the non-R version seems to be:

1) Cosmetic - Mainly, it adds a cover over the lens hood bayonet mount; and

2) Functional - It has a later firmware version (which I've read allows it to focus faster with the newer Pen cameras). Optically, the two versions are reported to be identical.

Since the non-R version can usually be found for a lower price, I bought that one and just updated the firmware (using the free software that can be downloaded from the Olympus site). It focuses very quickly on my E-PM1.
