As an avid photographer its a given that finding quality gear that can go the distance is getting harder. Even some of the most trusted names in photography have gone to the dark side. Others have stayed true to their craft. Over the years Dolica has never been the go to brand for quality photography gear. Keeping that in mind, I was a little hesitant taking this tripod for a test drive. Here are my thoughts.

After a weekend of outdoor shooting with this tripod in tow, I have to say things are starting to look up for Dolica. Made primarily of an aluminum alloy, the Dolica LX600B502DS weighs in at about 3.6 lbs and measures 16.6" folded and 60" fully extended. Even though I've been guilty of exceeding load limits with my other tripods, I didn't come close with this equipment and its 20 lb maximum rating. The thread size is the standard 1/4" for the plate and 3/8" for the base. Like I said earlier, the Dolica LX600B502DS leaves quite an impression. My thoughts on the main features of this tripod are;

1) Monopod - It works as advertised but I'm not totally sold on this feature.

2) Finish - The anodized coating is prime time and better then most name brands.

3) Weight Hook - Spring loaded and thread mounted, it held its own with my weight bags.

4) Center Column - Nicely built and gave me lead way for some serious low angle shooting.

5) Ballhead - Well constructed, and sturdier then it looks. Its a nice improvement over the company's previous models.

6) Weight - Usually I'm not a big fan of light weight tripods. Features and overall quality makes this one an obvious exception.

7) Foam Grips - Average material grade and comfortable. Unfortunately like most, these grips are the first things that are replaced.

8) Bubble Level - One of the few mounted levels that works. Its a great aid for adjustment, uneven panning, and tripod head movements.

9) Quick Release Plate - It provided a fluid release for quick camera change outs and free shooting. I recommend picking up more then one of these plates.

10) Legs - On an uneven surface the height and spread is easily set by a flip of the quick lock leg levers. The feet are mounted with both spikes and rubber caps.

The only negative I found is actually for the nylon carrying case. Its fitted with a way too short shoulder strap. I also found that the strap's stitching was weak and coming undone. Even if that problem did not exist, I wouldn't trust the bag's too thin metal hardware. The bag is nicely padded though. I changed out the metal rings and the strap. The manufacturer tags on a five year warranty. The company's website has shown improvement. There's actually a working customer support phone number now vice the tired and less responsive email only support.

For me personally, I find this tripod a bit pricey. There are others out there including name brands that come loaded with features at a lower price tag. I am surprised with the overall quality of this Dolica tripod. Its a vast improvement over previous editions. I'll find out in time if it can seriously be a reliable photography tool. I'll gladly update this review accordingly after tacking on some long term usage. In the meantime, the folks at Dolica got this one right.
