I have different bags for different needs. I like the well-padded stuffy bags for storage or going from points A to B. For working out of, going to a hockey game, or party, I prefer something small and minimalist such as a holster bag. And I have bags for these purposes.

However, a need I was looking to fill was a bag that could hold my life for 12+ hours during a busy work and school day. I work and go to school at Arizona State University. It's a big campus and I do a lot of walking. My wish was for a bag that could do and hold the following:

* Lunch and snacks
* School notebook
* Laptop or netbook
* Professional size DSLR
* Point-and-shoot camera, scientific calculator, wrist brace
* Miscellaneous pens, pencils, etc.
* Be comfortable for a 1 mile walk from my car to office, to and from classes during the day, and back again at night.
* Not be so gigantic as to be silly looking during the days where I don't take all of the above with me.

I have a large book bag that I was using to carry all of the above, except for the DSLR. On the days I brought my camera, I carried it in a Canon Deluxe Gadget Bag 100EG on my opposite shoulder.

I first tried the Think Tank Urban Disguise 50. This is a fantastic bag. For my particular needs though, it was too narrow for my Canon 7D. I didn't like the tight fit. The UD 50 version 2.0 has an expansion zipper but it seemed like a workaround, and I didn't like the look of it when expanded. The UD 50 is also more structured and business like. Not necessarily a bad thing, but in my case I thought it looked too much like luggage, especially in a classroom setting.

I had resolved myself to either leaving my camera or laptop at home. Then I noticed the Retrospective 30 is actually wider than the Urban Disguise line! Hmmm?? I ordered one. I'm glad I tried it!

The Retrospective 30 holds all of the above. When first filling it, I immediately found that my lunch bag was not going to fit in the main compartment with my bottles and camera body. But then!...I noticed just how BIG the two front side compartments really are: 8" tall, 6" wide, 3" deep. I can't my entire lunch (with ice pack) in one pocket, except for sandwich bread which I usually put in the other front pocket.

I've uploaded a few photos to better illustrate my comments. The bag came with the following items:
2) holster style inserts
2) 7" x 6" dividers
3) 7.5" x 3.75 dividers
1) all weather cover.
1) Metal spring hook key ring (attached to inner pocket)
Note: the dividers are VERY thin. I've tried to show this in my attached photos.

My only real gripes with this bag are about the the external and internal zippered pockets. Inexplicably, the external pocket does not come up as high as the top of the bag. Although the bag has the height to enclose a standard 8.5" x 11" spiral notebook, in practice the edge sticks out about one inch :( Similar issue with the inside zippered pocket. I never expected this bag could hold a laptop, and it's not advertised as such. However, I feel that Think Tank could not have made this bag more netbook friendly. It would have been sooo easy guys! A typical netbook is about what, 10" X 7" or so, yes? Unfortunately, the top of the inner pocket does not come up as high as the top of the bag. What could have easly been a 7.5" deep pocket is only a 6.5" deep pocket. Anyway, the saving grace for the two zippered pockets is that they are still usable for my needs; I just cannot zip them closed.

I have one other pocket issue; I would have preferred one or two more small pockets for better organized storage of small incidentals. Card reader, eyeglasses, car keys, change, gum, office keys. These all get mixed together in one of the two inside pockets. And with no small pocket outside, it means I have to open the flap and search around for these items.

All in all this is a fantastic messenger style camera bag. Not quite perfect (for me), but this is my favorite camera bag to date. I love the unstructured, messenger style. I like that it looks and functions great whether I'm carrying all my stuff or just some of it. The pinestone color is cool, kind of a "military surplus" looking olive. The comfortable shoulder pad is *moveable* along the strap -- big plus! The build quality is top notch (other than the small removable hand strap). This bag feels built to last.
