Extremely compact and light-weight, the Leica 28mm f/2.8 Elmarit-M Aspherical Lens is currently the most compact lens in the line-up of Leica M-system lenses. This lens is practically distortion-free in the whole focus range from 2.3" (0.7 m) to infinity and only extends slightly into the viewfinder field of M cameras. This lens has been updated with the "6-bit" coding, which allows the digital M camera to read this information optically and to identify which lens is being used. The camera can then (optionally) apply a "final stage" software based vignetting correction (for RAW images the lens used is simply recorded, no change is made).

First off, I do not understand people who write reviews on Amazon without actually having used the product. Anyone can gleam information off the web, mfg's press releases and the such and paste something together.

So, here's a review of the 28mm 2.8 Asph from someone that actually owns and uses the lens! Go figure! First off, this thing is tiny. In ways it is a bit of a let down as you think, "I spent so much money but just got this?!" Then you realize that you want it as small as possible. It makes it lighter, and much easier to handle on the camera. The whole point - at least one of the points - of using rangefinder cameras is that their inherent design allows much smaller lenses to be used.

On camera (I use a Leica M-E and M3), it is a joy. Super easy and quick to focus, with an exceedingly smooth focus throw, as well as a short focus throw. The aperture ring also turns with very precise, but light, pressure. The standard lens hood clips on, so that it is very secure and does not interfere with the filter threads. It comes with two lens caps - one to be used without the hood - which is good. And one piece of junk that falls off at any moment to be used with the lens hood - bad. As I always use the hood (why not, it provides physical and optical protection), I just use a UV filter on the lens as a last line of defense.

Now the important part. Is it sharp? Yes. Crazy sharp corner to corner, from wide open to small apertures. Nothing else to say. This lens will not let you down. Any poor quality photos will have only the photographer to blame!

FYI if you use this lens on the M9 or M-E, you will have to move your eye around to see the edges of the frame. If you use glasses, well, you won't see the edges. If you use a camera like an M3, you will have to use an external finder that slips onto the hot shoe. I use a nice metal one made by Voigtlander. No need to pay twice as much for a Leica one as this thing is just for viewing, not taking photos!
