Manfrotto MVH502A,546BK Video Tripod System with Mvh502A Head, 546 Tripod and Tripod Bag Review

I generally think this tripod/head combo is great. My biggest gripe is that the range of adjustment, especially for vertical tilt, is kind of small. I can get what I want out of it, but I have to be careful dialing it in, a smidge too much turn of the dial either way and it's too tight or too loose. I hope that with time this doesn't get worse. But once everything is dialed in it's quite wonderful and gives me predictably smooth results. It's a bit difficult to see the bubble level, even with plenty of light on it it's hard to tell when it's perfectly centered. In retrospect I may have preferred spending a bit more and getting the 504 head, but this seems like it will work fine. The sticks are great, light and very rigid, though it takes a little practice deploying the thing with that odd spreader. One thing I love is that you can get the whole system really low by releasing the arms on the spreader in the tripod's lowest setting, bringing the head down about 18" off the ground, great height for slider work. OH, and by the way, the bag this comes with is NOT the padded bag, just a thin nylon bag. That seriously bugged me, as I want that bag for traveling and will now be picking it up separately, to the tune of about $120. I've seen it and it's like fine Italian luggage, but it looks like I could check it in on a flight and it would arrive in good shape, so it's worth it to me. All in all, I'm glad I bought this. My C100 looks pretty great on it.

UPDATE: Since I received and started using this my rig has ballooned in size and weight, and I'm forced to admit that I need a bigger, stronger head. With the C100, mattbox, follow focus, and especially a 70-200 lens I seem to have come up against the adjustable limits of this setup. I still think it's great for a lighter rig, but the weight limits for this head should be heeded (sigh).

UPDATE #2: IMPORTANT! Recently I was on a shoot and this tripod, with my C100 rig including a 70-200L lens, spontaneously collapsed and went over on a concrete floor. Luckily, the matt box took the brunt of it and miraculously nothing else was damaged. The culprit was the tensioning in the leg adjustment clamps. If you own this tripod, use the little allen wrench that came with it and make SURE all 6 of the tensioners are nice and tight when you set the clamps. Whenever I use this tripod now, I lean on it with close to my full weight before setting my camera up on it. I hope it was just set badly when it came from the factory, but I don't want to experience that sound of $10K worth of equipment hitting the ground again. Other than that, these legs with a 504 head are a good combo for a C100 all rigged up. Whew.
