BlackRapid RSD-2BB Double Slim (DR-2 Double Strap) (Black) Review

When I was regularly shooting medium format film on rangefinder cameras (new Mamiya 6), I routinely carried two bodies, one with wide angle 50mm and another, 75mm or 150mm, because there is no such thing as zoom. Wearing two cameras with conventional strap was a torture, but we did not have any better option back then.

When digital came along, I downgraded to full frame Canon bodies for most routine commercial shoots. At first, 24-70mm or 24-105mm zooms would minimize the need for prime lenses, but after trying them for a while, you know what, I miss the clarity and crisp image from high quality prime lenses. I also miss the grand scale of bokeh from prime lenses. These were so much better in the medium format days, and I miss them. So, for most location work, I began to wear two Canon bodies with primes on, plus a lens changing bag for a few more lenses. This was a torture.

Wearing two camera bodies, regardless of what lens you put on them, is a LOT, LOT easier with a double strap. Now, I didn't do detailed comparison between DR-1 and DR-2. DR-2 is supposed to be low profile, but I didn't notice any problem with it, nor do I feel it could be better if made wider, so I am happy with DR-2.

The downside of double strap is that, it's not easy to wear and take off. If you are shooting a location editorial or wedding type event, you probably wear the cameras all day long, so it shouldn't be an issue. But when I want to take breaks, I tend to unhook the camera bodies while wearing the strap.

Because of that, when I'm working in my studio, I prefer to have a single strap (I actually use California Sun Sniper straps for those) attached on each camera, as they are easy to wear and take off. When I switch the camera, I simply switch with the straps intact with the camera, and I don't take the camera off the strap when I'm working like this.

They advertise DR-2 can be split into two single camera straps. This is true, and they are usable that way, but the curvarture and the length of the straps are suboptimal for this use. That's why I prefer to use single camera strap over halves of DR-2.

If you are a professional who shoots outside the studio, and if you routinely use multiple bodies, I think you'll love this strap.
