I have 2 of the Night Owl Apollo's and they have been a good value. I needed a 3rd security DVR and I went looking for another Apollo, but they have been discontinued and apparently they were replaced by this unit. So I bought this unit thinking that Night Owl may have done an upgrade/improvement over the Apollo to keep up with the offerings from the other guys, but I was wrong! Night Owl really cheapened this thing out compared to the Apollo. They took off ALL the buttons on the front of the unit, now when you want to do an instant record/stop you just can't push a button, have to find the remote (now when I push the record button on the remote all 3 units start recording when I only need the one to record!!!!). They took away the instruction manual that told you how to install the hard drive first, on units that didn't come with one and put in a Basic Quick Setup Guide, which doesn't even mention installing the hard drive (in fact the install manual on the CD doesn't mention the hard drive installation either). Speaking about the hard drive they took away the hard drive bracket and now you install the hard drive through 4 holes in the bottom of the case (cheaper that way) and the SATA data cable is so short it barely reaches the connector on the hard drive. I could go on and on, but I think you get the message that they went as cheap as they could and still get it to work and I have to say it does work, but I will say one more thing and that is I would have gladly paid more money to get an Apollo instead of this cheapo thing and it is needless to say I'm very disappointed in NIGHT OWL!!!

Debao SU-800 Nikon Wireless Speedlight Commander / Flash Trigger by EACHSHOT Review

I purchased mine via Ebay when these were first becoming available, they weren't available through Amazon at the time. For me, at half the cost of the Nikon Su-800, it was a risk worth taking. I wanted something relatively inexpensive that I could use with my Nikon D3100 which did not have the commander feature built-in like the other bodies I own, I also did not want to dedicate one of my flashes to solely be used as a commander. The Debao SU-800 has worked well without any problems since I have owned it, I have used it inside mostly but have had an occasion to use it in direct sunlight and I did not have any issues with it triggering my flash. So this is a pretty decent piece of equipment for the money. Like someone else pointed out, the head swivels allowing for better line of site.

The reason I did not give this 5 stars is that the specs claim it works with the D70, in my case it does work, sort of. I mentioned I own other bodies, I have used this SU-800 copy with a D800, D600 as well as the D3100 without issues, exposures have been pretty close, with an occasional adjust of + or - 0.3 EV, no big deal. The problems I have had have been with the D70, the camera will communicate with the Su-800 but something is lost in translation as exposures are way off, either overexposed or underexposed. The same D70 camera will work with my SB-800's or SB-910's with one of the strobes used as a commander on the D70 and provide accurate and consistent exposures. Mine may be an isolated incident but I wanted to mention it in case anyone runs into the same issue. If you are using a newer DSLR I think this will work for you but perhaps not on the older bodies.

So great bang for the buck with newer bodies, older body owners, it could be hit and miss.

AmScope USB2.0 Digital Imager + 40X-1000X Glass Optics Student Compound Microscope Review

I'm a homebrewer, and I bought this microscope to count yeast cells for my starters. I'm starting to cultivate my own strains, wash/reuse commonly used strains, and harvest yeast from bottle conditioned craft beer. This microscope is great for that purpose, in conjunction with a hemocytometer to precisely count the sample.

I can clearly see the hemocytometer squares at 40x, and then I digitally zoom with the imager to get higher magnifications to do the actual counting. One tip--instead of buying the more expensive model with the mechanical stage (little screw-driven apparatus to precisely move the sample a measured amount), I bought this model, and bought the mechanical stage accessory directly from Amcope's website. The microscope optics and imager do exactly what I want. Would highly recommend to any homebrewers for the purposes of yeast cell counting.

Canon EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM Telephoto Zoom Lens for Canon SLR Cameras Review

I get frustrated by all the negative reviews this lens gets on the web. Yes, the AF is slow and the IS is first generation. Yes, it's not totally sharp and it's slow at the long end. But what other $440 (inc shipping) 300mm lenses with IS is there?

* The DO costs $1100 and is shorter but heavier and the optics are not much better.

* The 100-400L costs $1400, is much larger and just as slow.

* The 70-200/4L is 50% more expensive, only 200mm and lacks IS.

* The new 70-300 IS that replaces this lens will probably be a better lens than this version but it costs 50% more and currently (Oct 05) is still not available in the US.

The 75-300mm IS is my zoo lens so I don't use it nearly as much as my standard zoom for everyday photography. On my Digital Rebel with its 1.6x crop factor this lens is the equivalent of 120-480mm in 35mm terms, and with the image stabilization feature it makes for some exotic optics. Play to this lens' strengths (middle of the aperture range [don't be afraid of higher ISO settings to achieve this] and not the extreme long end) and your images will be able to be printed at 8x10 without an issue.

You're not going to be able to easily track a speeding cheetah with this lens but that is not what this lens is for. It's also unfair to compare this lens to L series alternatives - if you can afford L series lenses then use them but don't cut those of us down without your disposable income just for enjoying this lens. If you own this lens and you want to improve the quality of your images remember to always use a lens hood. Also, the IS is amazing but there are limits; a monopod will improve image sharpness no end. But both these tips apply equally to most lenses both cheaper and more expensive.

This lens has earned a permanent place in my camera bag. It's cheap enough and light enough to carry just in case you might need a strong telephoto. The IS really works and is really useful on a telephoto with this kind of zoom range. Don't be put off or intimidated by lens snobs and line counters. This lens also holds its value well; buy it, and use it, now while you're saving for your L dream telephoto and you will be able to sell it for not much less than you paid for it when the time comes to upgrade. When that time comes you just might decide that you want to keep the 75-300mm IS around as well. This lens is great value and very useable even if it is not a great lens.
