The GT2542T is a strong, stable yet extremely compact and lightweight carbon fiber tripod, designed to balance uncompromising professional support with ease of transport for travelling photographers. Gitzo's innovative Traveler design is more compact than a standard tripod structure because the 4-section legs turn 180 Degree so that, when folded, they completely enclose the center column locking mechanism and the column itself. Despite its short folded length, the GT2542T opens to a practical working height for everyday use. The GT2542T can be used with any head. For those who require extreme compactness, a Gitzo Traveler ball (sold separately) head is recommended, since it too fits within the tripod's own folded dimensions and enveloped by the legs. The GT2542T legs are made from the same high-performance rigid and lightweight Gitzo 6X carbon fiber tubing as is used on Gitzo Mountaineer and top-of-the-range Systematic tripods, with G-Lock leg locking rings for faster set-up and positioning, and magnesium castings to help keep weight to an absolute minimum. Gitzo GT2542T Traveler Tripod (Black) Review

This tripod is amazing. I first bought a 1542T but returned it and got this one. This feels more stable than the 1542t and also it folds shorter since the head is mostly inside the folded legs (like the 1541t and 1544t). It is something like 0.7 pounds heavier than the 1542t but I felt like the length was more important since the 1542t stuck out too high above my photo backpack (Lowe Pro - Photo Sport 200AW). They both fit ok, but the 2542t is less awkward since it does not stick out above the top of the backpack. I also felt the added stability was worth the 0.7 pounds. I may consider also getting a smaller lighter very compact tripod for longer hikes, but for now this one is perfect. I usually don't carry it more than a few miles or so. I think it weighs about the same as an average full frame lens (including the head) -- for reference. I have a Markins Q3t head mounted on it and I couldn't be happier with the combination.

I also have an extremely heavy Manfrotto metal studio tripod and this Gitzo is far more stable. The Manfrotto goes much taller, so I may still hang on to it, but otherwise this 2542t is superior in every way. Of course I expected it to be lightweight and compact, but I certainly didn't realize how rock solid stable it would be. If you lower the center shaft it really doesn't move at all. Awesome.
