Frankly, the only reason I bought this unit was price: I had somehow lost my Canon ST-E2 on a shoot and am still hoping it will turn up someday, so didn't want to spend $300 on another Canon-brand ST-E2.

However, I have to say I've been pleasantly surprised with the Yongnuo. The quality of construction seems good, with nicely molded plastics and sturdy fittings. The controls work correctly and performance seems just as good as the Canon unit's. Even the instruction manual, although obviously written by a non-native English speaker, is comprehensible and usable.

In fact, the Yongnuo has two features that are significant advantages over the Canon unit's. (1) The Yongnuo runs on two AA batteries, the same type as my Canon flash units use; that means I can use the same spare batteries for both, so I only have to carry extras of one type of battery. The Canon needs a 2CR5 battery. (2) The Yongnuo swivels 135 degrees in either direction on its mounting foot, so you have more latitude in getting it aimed straight at the flash unit; this can increase effective range.

The LEDs on the Canon unit's control panel look a little more refined, and I prefer Canon's slide-type power switch over Yongnuo's push-on/push-off switch. However, these are minor drawbacks. I still hope I find my Canon ST-E2, but meanwhile I don't feel I'm settling for less with the Yongnuo.
