Graduated ND filters are part clear, part neutral density (available in grades of .3 (1 stop), .45 (1.5 stops), .6 (2 stops), .75 (2.5 stops), .9 (3 stops). They allow the reduction of light to part of a scene, balancing light and dark for an even exposure. Lee graduated neutral density filters are available with soft, hard or blended transitions from dark to clear. The soft edge is recommended for wide angle lenses and the hard edge is recommended for normal and longer lenses

I bought this filter (and 77mm adapter, lee branded filter holder) before my trip to Maui a few weeks ago. I'm still a little light headed by the price for all the equipment, but I must say that the .9 (3 stop) soft graduated neutral density filter was fantastic. I was a bit surprised to see that the filter was not glass, but with significant use outdoors, I'm happy for the lighter weight and forgiveness that a 4x5" piece of glass would not have allowed.

Because of the large size of the filter in addition to the holder and adapter ring, I was frustrated with the task of taking each piece out of it's case (they are very nice btw) and messing around with assembly minutes before a sunrise or sunset. This is my own fault since I was not there earlier enough to spend the time this product requires.

The good:
great optical performance
ability to choose any angle and coverage of the filter (including a full coverage at 3 stops).
plastic is light
plastic is slightly flexible
ability to use same filter on other lenses (with purchase of an adapter ring)
each piece of the system has a case

The bad:
plastic just seems wrong... and sorta flimsy
I get a little bit of the filter holder/fixture at 12mm in the corners of my images.
Each piece has a case (lots to mess with).
I worry that the paper that came with the filter to protect it from the case will get lost or get worn out.
Initial setup is a little pricy, but you get what you pay for.

Overall, I'm very happy with this system and given the opportunity I would do it again.
