Burris Eliminator 3.5-10 x 40mm Rangefinder Scope, Black Review

First off I would be tempted to give the scope a five star rating but for a couple of small gripes. First to get the negative out of the way. The scope is waaay bigger mounted on my rifle than it looks in the photographs. Second, it is a heavy scope and adds real weight to the rifle. In fairness to Burris, the specs are published and its weight is stated right there in front of you, but it's really one of those things that you never really appreciate the number until you feel it on the rifle. Third is the Burris published ballistic charts that come with the scope. I am very disappointed with that part of the package. So much so that I had initial intentions to return it, but ultimately decided against doing that. I have yet to find anywhere on Burris' website or in the packaging that came with the scope the magical "drop number" that Burris promotes as making this system work so easily. I even called customer service to complain about this. The support guy was very nice and tried to help me out, but ultimately the PDF that he emailed me to remedy the situation did not contain the missing drop numbers that I needed to program the scope. I also found out very quickly that there are waaaay more ammunition manufactures on the market in .223 Remington/ 5.56 NATO than what Burris has on their chart. OK, no sweat, I'm going to fix this issue manually. A pain, because I have to chase down the ballistics from the individual ammo manufacturer directly.

Now, on to the scope review. The scope is nice. Very clear optics. Not the type of perfomance optics-wise that the stratospherically priced scopes deliver, but for most hunting applications, the optics quality of the Burris are very acceptable. Decent eye relief and a very smooth magnification dial that runs from 3.5x to 10x very smoothly and with no change in the optics picture. The 1/4 MOA adjustment turrets are very solid and positive. The 50 MOA adjustment should be suitable for just about any mounting application. (Note: I counted 201 "Clicks" from bottom to top on my scope)

The laser range finder is just an incredible feature and the real selling point. One press of the left hand side rubberized button turns the electronics on. A second press instantly produces the range to target and simultaneously lights the hold-over LED (which is very small and does not detract from the sight picture in the slightest). I really like this part of the scope and it is what ultimately led me to overlook the other issue discussed above and keep the scope.

I have had the scope for about 2 months now, and although it's not hunting season, its range performance leave little doubt that when this fall rolls around, it will put meat in the freezer.

In summary, a five star scope for its performance. A one star reduction for the size, weight and infernal Burris ballistic chart snafu.
