Yes, this tripod is kind of heavy. And somewhat bulky. But sturdy as a tank and versatile as a swiss pocket knife. And, most importantly for me, it does allow me, 6 foot 3 inches, to shoot upright, and not in some awkwardly crouched position.
Actually, if the center post is pulled out completely, the viewfinder of my Nikon D5000 hovers a good five inches above my eye level.
I use an old Manfrotto ball head with the legs, which is a fairly good, but certainly not an ideal combination. Maybe later, I will invest in some heavy duty ball head that is a better fit.
But for now, I am most satisfied. The flexibility of the legs is very good - you can bring the tripod into position in almost every conceivable way. The legs are surrounded by a thick layer of sponge-like material. That contributes to the overall bulkiness, but also provides an extremely good grip and a very nice tactile experience.
All in all, this is the tripod for big guys, who need a sturdy platform with flexible leg positions and a good grip.
