Carl Zeiss Diascope Angled 85mm Spotting Scope with Vario 20-75x Eyepiece Review

I spent months looking through spotting scopes that others had brought to the range. I read countless reviews. I even ordered a few scopes and then returned them because clarity and performance wasn't as expected. I came to the realization that you have to spend the money for high quality optics. There are scopes that perform well for half the money, but they don't perform exceptionally. I initially didn't think I needed something exceptional, but with optical performance, either the image is clear and bright or it isn't. I haven't found anything about this Zeiss scope that isn't exceptional. The fit and finish, the glass and the design is pure genius. Even expensive scopes will lose detail as the zoom is moved out to the highest magnification, but with this scope I barely noticed loss of detail out to 75x. ALL other scopes decline quite noticeably as they approach 60x. Focusing is accomplished with ONE knob! It is hard to describe, but you spin the knob rapidly for gross movement and then slowly move the same knob for fine adjustment. I know I said genius already, but the word fits. I know some will think I am a psychopath for spending so much, but I would go nuts living with an optically inferior scope. I'll get years of enjoyment with this and will be able to pass it on to my boys some day.

Addendum: At the time I purchased this, there was a promotion offering a free tripod. It took three months, but it finally came. I expected a generic pile of junk, since it was a promotional item, but the tripod I received is unbelievable. It's a Zeiss! Maybe the promotion listed it as a Zeiss, but I don't remember. Anyway, the heft and quality of this tripod is exceptional. I looked it up and unless I am mistaken, this normally lists for about $400. Needless to say, if it says "Zeiss", you know you're dealing with quality.
