This appears to be a very well made instrument -- solid, stable and very heavy. The optics are clear and give a crisp view. The camera software installed without problems (Windows 7) and was easy to set up, although it appears to have many options which will require some time commitment in order to learn its full capabilities. I've never been exposed to the name brand microscopes used by professionals, but I find it hard to believe that their quality / performance differences would justify the significant differences in the cost of those instruments over this one, at least for amateur use. The instructions provided are sparse and obviously written by a non-native English speaker. While not horrible, they could certainly be improved. I would strongly recommend the YouTube video "How to use a microscope and oil immersion" posted by bioprofaz before ever using your microscope if you are not familiar with proper set up and use, particularly for the oil immersion lens.
