Product Description
The Fotodiox Pro LED-876A is a professional, powerful, yet lightweight light that uses 876 ultra bright 5600k LEDs. The daylight balanced LEDs offer full spectrum, beautifully soft light to make the ideal choice for both studio photo and studio video production. The rear battery mounts allow for the option to do location shooting anywhere, even if there is no power available! The rear dimmer dial allows the light to be adjusted as needed for almost every shooting scenario. The removable diffusion panel allows the light to be diffused as needed for most shooting scenarios and allows a number of additional gels and/or diffusion cloths to be added to help control and create the perfect lighting.
Fotodiox Pro LED 876A, Still / Video Photography Studio LED Light Kit, with Dimmable Switch, Removable Diffusion Panel Review
Our video production company purchased 4 of these LED panels (2 or the 508A panels and 2 of the 876A panels) to replace our very outdated and clunky "HMI" still photo lights. They work and we will continue to use them (with some supplementation from other instruments). First off, they are no where near 5600K. I don't have a color meter, but our Sony Z7U White Balances at 7000K using them and our EA50 white balances with them at 6300K. That in an of itself is an interesting result. I'd personally peg them at around 6500K (definitely cooler than daylight) but with a very strange spectrum. They have a slight magenta look to them that I was not expecting. Kinda like they over corrected when they were trying to get rid of the "green spike" that LEDs are notorious for. They can be mixed with daylight and when looking through the viewfinder they look pretty good when white balanced anywhere between about 6000K and 7000K (depending on your camera).
As previously mentioned, we will continue to use these lights because:
1) They are fast to put up and take down (although we did end up having to purchase 5/8 inch stud adapters instead of using the provided 3/8 inch and 1/4 inch screw mounts), much faster than our old "HMI" kit.
2) They are battery powered which means NO cords!
3) They get around 3 hours from a charge with both batteries attached @ 100% out of the 876A
4) They can easily be dimmed without using scrims or ND or extra diffusion.
Unfortunately:
1) We have no control over where the light goes. There are no barn doors or egg crates to control or shape the light (which we usually don't have time to do anyway...
2) They're not the advertised 5600K color temperature
3) Despite what you may be thinking, DON'T UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES use your Sony branded L mount batteries to power these lights or use the provided generic L mount batteries to power your camcorder. Won't work and could damage your Sony branded battery.
4) I'm not entirely sure that the 876A is any brighter than the 508A...
Hope this helps.
