I had the joy of being able to borrow a friend's Alan Gordon viewfinder, and I have nothing but good things to say about it! In case you don't know, Alan Gordon Enterprises is one of the leaders in Director's Viewfinders in the world, with their pro line reaching up to around $5000! Clearly this isn't going to be of the same quality, but normally a company will at least try and keep their good name with their budget products!

BUILD/QUALITY
This thing feels very nice in the hand, and while it is specifically designed to be a lightweight piece of equipment, it doesn't feel as cheap as some of the budget Viewfinders available on Amazon. The glass seems to be of very high quality with no strange reflections or colorations you will also find on cheaper Viewfinders! The focus/zoom mechanism is very smooth without being loose, limiting the amount that you will accidentally change your settings while holding it. It is quite small to hold, so for those of you with larger hands you may just have to bite the bullet and go with a mid/full-sized Viewfinder!

OPERATION
The Viewfinder is very easy to use, and has quite a comfortable eyepiece for extended use. As far as operation, it has a wide range of settings, from anamorphic to super16 and 35mm. It also supports 2/3", 1/2" and 1/3" video formats! I would say that is enough for all but the most serious professionals, and unless you are a cinematographer (not a commercial videographer like me) you will not find this lacking!

WHY 5 STARS?

- Costs about the same as you would spend on lunch for you and your crew!

OVERALL
I would highly recommend this over the Opteka Viewfinder (I have used both). While the latter is not bad, the quality put out my Alan Gordon Enterprises is noticeably better! A great addition to your film-making toolkit!

Lorex' Wireless System (#LW2301) is a relatively compact surveillance system. It has very few pieces including an indoor/outdoor-"Nightvision" camera, a digital receiver with an RCA stereo output, 2 GB harddrive and an assortment of mounting accessories.

* I found the installation pretty straightforward and not really needing to consult the manual. However, there is a need for the manual if you elect to attach several (optional) cameras to the system.

Other than a hammer or a screwdriver to nail the camera's wall mount, there's no other mandatory tool you'll need to get the basic system up and running in a matter of 10 minutes max.

** If, as I stated in the video, that you have one of those older model TVs' that you're going to use as the monitor, then you'll need a mono-stereo input converter, which is about $20, to be able to receive the signal from the camera to the receiver.

I'd also recommend, a UPS (a portable battery backup unit)--prices range from $35- $200 with the median around $60.

*** When deciding how to use the system, I found it important, especially if you're considering it for home use to think about where you want to have strict surveillance. If you want to be alerted when someone is just outside your home, the camera must be placed outside. I made an interesting discovery during the first day of testing. I mounted the camera in the foyer with the backdoor several feet away. The foyer is separated by several full-length glass that opens up to the outside. With the camera aimed directly outside past the foyer (with a clear shot of roughly 50'), the camera would stream people going by but wouldn't recognize them even someone who was directly on the opposite side of the open glass door to the foyer. It was not until the person walked in that the system recognized them. This is not a negative criticism but an observation as to the limits of the system.

I also wasn't terribly impressed with the resolution of the image saved on the receiver's harddrive. As you can see in the video, the image of the person walking by and setting off the alarm (me!) wasn't sharp despite my being no more than a foot away from the camera.

**** For what it promises and for the price, I would consider this a good (not a great) buy for a home/ apartment use and maybe for a section of an office in a small business.

Update: Images up to ISO 51,200 have very acceptable levels of noise (very little). Worst case, I touched up with Dfine 2.0 (noise reduction software) and they look nearly perfect. I experimented with the movie mode. The camera took some very nice looking videos in extremely low light. I don't know what ISO it used, but it must be hitting ISO 102,400 at times. The video and sound using the internal microphone are really good. I may add an external stereo mic in the future if I shoot video. I should have known, you can't shoot movies in vertical format -- of course -- but I did take some that way before I realized that format doesn't work when you play back on a TV.

I've now got a growing collection of images in various conditions and remain extremely pleased with this camera.

I received my new Nikon D3S only a couple of days ago, and my early testing of this camera has already proven it to be much more than I expected. I took a few dozen test shots in nearly complete darkness and with relatively little noise the shots look like they were taken in fairly bright lighting. I am very impressed. In fact, I would even say they are unbelievable.

I love the new "info" button. I passed over the written material before the camera arrived thinking: who cares. Well, I find it to be an extremely helpful feature. When you press the "info" button, it shows not only the exposure settings, but gives you immediate access to several of the relevant menu options that you can then immediately access and make changes. I find this to be very quick and useful.

The D3S seems a bit bigger than my Nikon D2Xs and other professional bodies I use, but it feels like it's built absolutely solid. Of course, since the D3S is an FX (full frame) sensor, I have heavier lenses attached and in my bag too. I love the D3S ergonomics and the programmable function and other buttons (programmable AE/AL and Preview button). I hate to fumble with menus in the field (sorry Canon 1ds Mark III and 5D Mark IV and others, but Nikon has you beat here), and the Nikon gives fast access to all the key settings.

I haven't done extensive image tests yet, but my first impression is the images are superb, color is very accurate and auto focus is very fast and accurate, even in what I'd call "no light." I have usable images at ISO 102,400 (an amazing seven full stops better than other pro-bodies I use). At this point, I still can't believe how good images look at ISO 102,400, and images at ISO 51,200 and 25,600 look nearly perfect with either no high ISO NR (noise reduction) or standard NR.

Looking at my images at high magnification and they appear much clearer than even higher megapixel resolution bodies I use. I am now finally convinced beyond any doubt that megapixel is more of a marketing ploy than meaningful for professional photographers and other factors are more important.

As a pro who uses high end digital bodies, this is my first choice (maybe my only choice) for most assignments. I do a fair amount of studio work and thought I might opt for the Nikon D3X or even a Canon body since high ISO is not important, but this camera is so good I may use it for all my photography work in all conditions. If I really need high-end studio shots, I'll perhaps use my Mamiya with a digital back or even rent a Hasselblad.

Microtek ScanMaker i800 Plus LED Review

I have had the i800 for three years and on many occassions it has stopped working and caused all my USB ports to freeze. I have installed it on a Dell, a compaq, an Asus, an MSI, and an EVGA motherboard. If I have the scanner plugged in then none of my USB ports work. If I uninstall the scanner software then they all magicaly come back to life. Contacted tech support in 2009, 2010 and 2012. Most recently they continue to say this is the first they have ever heard of it. So I sent them links to three other reviews claiming they had also contacted tech support with this same issue.

Their tech support will lie to get you to go away - afterall they have your money. I rather not have a scanner at all then have theirs.

Lorex LIVE LW2702 Wireless Digital Security System Review

Overall, this is a great system. I was impressed with the reception and the graphics. That being said, I had to return it for two reasons. 1) The system did not come with a remote control. I called Lorex customer service and they can easily take care of that. 2) Although the system is described as an indoor/outdoor system, it is NOT weatherproof. I always thought that if a surveillance system was outdoor, it could withstand the weather. When I called customer service about this, they pointed out that the lens cannot get wet, otherwise it may not work correctly. In addition, there can be no moisture allowed into the system itself. I only discovered this after hooking up the system.
Just keep in mind that although it is a good sytem, it is NOT waterproof.
