The Expedition 5x is the perfect mid-size pack for a wide range of photo equipment. The main compartment is completely foam padded with numerous adjustable, foam-padded dividers to protect digital and film SLRs with lenses attached, 4-5 additional lenses, and a flash. A foam-padded front pocket with a water-resistant zipper holds most 12" screen laptops. Two "wing" accessory pockets with water-resistant zippers organize and provide quick access to important accessories without disturbing the photo gear. These "wing" accessory pockets also feature Tamrac's patented Memory & Battery Management System that uses red flags to identify available memory cards and batteries from ones that have been used up. A tripod is carried between these pockets with Tamrac's QuickClip tripod attachment system. Inside, the camera with a long zoom lens attached is suspended on two vertical, foam-padded dividers that are internally reinforced with rigid plastic. A restraint strap holds lens firmly in place. A Dual-Hinge Divider System allows a second SLR to be carried with a lens attached. Two Windowpane-Mesh pockets inside the front flap visibly organize filters, film and other accessories. I purchased this about a year ago from a store locally (Fairbanks, AK). I can honestly say I haven't regretted the purchase for a second.

First off, completely water resistant. The pockets on the outside have those special "seam on the inside" zipper, and the main bag has a much heavier duty zipper that is covered by a flap. After zipping it shut, you pull the flap over it and tighten with a cord. I've walked outside in the rain and snow for hours and never had to worry about my equipment getting wet.

The inside in soft and compartmentalized. There are about 8 or so Velcro "walls" you can put up to fully customize to any size lens or camera. The Velcro is also very strong, so you never have to worry about it coming loose.

As has been previously stated in other reviews, the "laptop pocket" leaves a bit to be desired. Personally I use it for either food/water (Camelbak) storage, or for my fold up diffuser. It has the same waterproof zipper as the outer pocket, its just kinda tiny for most laptops.

The Tripod pocket and straps work amazingly well. I'm not even sure how, because at first glance it doesn't look steady. However, I've done just about every imaginable physical activity (Rock climbing, skiing, etc) with this bag and my tripod has never come close to falling off. With the quick release you can have it off the bag in seconds.

Lastly, the bag is really really comfortable. I've made 10+ mile hikes with it and barely noticed its there. It has a padded back with indentions in it to allow air through, thus stopping your back from being covered in sweat.

All in all, I highly recommend this bag. After two years of rugged use not a single thing is broken or missing.
