Product Description

Mamiya 7 II / Mamiya 7 6x7 Rangefinder Camera The Mamiya 7 II now offers double exposure capability and choice of black or champagne finish with a restyling over the original Mamiya 7 model. Both cameras accept the 24x65mm, 35mm Panoramic adapter kit and all Mamiya 7 lenses including the latest 50mm f/4 superwide lens with optical finder. The Mamiya 7 II has high visibility frame lines in the focusing system so that the bright frame appears clearly in the rangefinder, even in the case of intense ambient light. Three strap lugs now make the camera easy to carry in either vertical and horizontal positions. The location of the cable release socket has been moved to the more accessible bottom-right side of the body. Like its predecessor, it is a quick on the draw camera that handles with 35mm ease. Additionally, it remains the most comprehensive system offering a range of options to fill the demands of serious professionals and aspiring 35mm enthusiasts alike. This camera is the only 6x7cm rangefinder system which features interchangeable lenses. With increased demand from pros and advanced 35mm shooters, the unique niche that the Mamiya 7 satisfies with a lightweight, compact 6x7 system is now replaced by an even more versatile model. Additionally, an optional Panoramic Adapter for 35mm film is available to create 24x65mm images with the MAMIYA 7 II, making this a dual-format camera by utilizing both the ideal 6x7cm format and the increasingly popular 24 x 65mm panoramic format (1:2.7 aspect ratio). Item Specifications: Product Description: Mamiya 7 II - rangefinder - medium Camera Type: Rangefinder Dimensions (WxDxH): 6.3 in x 2.6 in x 4.4 in Weight: 32.4 oz Camera Format: Medium Film Back Film Formats: Type 120, type 220 Exposure Range: 1/500 sec - 4 sec Film Advance: Manual Viewfinder: Real-image Timer Functions: Self timer Battery: 1 x battery - 4LR44

Mamiya 7 II Black Camera Body Review

I usually shoot large format, either 4x5 or 8x10 (Usually 4x5). As anyone who has ever shot large format knows, its labor intensive. You have to pull out the camera, set it up on the tripod, Select the proper lens, go under the dark cloth and compose the picture, pull out a torpedo level and level out the camera, bring out your light meter and meter the scene for the proper exposure, and finally pull out your film holders and expose the picture. I have actually gotten pretty fast at doing all of this, when I want to be, but its still labor intensive any way you look at it.

With that being said there are times when I like to shoot without it being so labor intensive. When I am in these shoot quick and fast mood's I go with my Mamiya 7. The Mamiya 7 is a 6x7 medium format rangefinder camera with interchangeable leaf shutter lenses. Shutter speeds range from 4 sec. to 1/500 sec. and it has a Bulb setting which allows any length of exposure necessary by keeping the button pressed down. It has double exposure capability, X synchronization at all speeds, Film speed settings from ISO 25 to ISO 1600, Exposure Corrections +/- 2EV in 1/3 step, an Automatic parallax compensating viewfinder, weighs 2.6 pounds with the standard 80 mm lens and last but not least comes in 2 different colors, Champagne and Black. This camera also has some great add-ons including a Polaroid back and a 35mm Panoramic Adapter Kit which yields spectacular 24x65mm images, an aspect ratio of 1:2.7.

Its an extremely comfortable camera to shoot with as it basically mimics a 35mm body, its just a bit bigger body wise. Overall there are 6 lenses available for the Mamiya 7.

Ultra-Wide Angle 43mm f/4.5
Super Wide Angle 50mm f/4.5
65mm f/4.0
Standard 80mm f/4.0
Telephoto 150mm f/4.5
Telephoto 210mm f/8

In all honesty the lenses for this system are STUNNING and I do mean STUNNING!! I am used to Schneider MC XL 4x5 lenses so I am not easily impressed in this regard and I was simply blown away the first time I saw the quality of pictures these lenses produce. They are just razor sharp. On top of that this camera has a fabulous metering system. In fact its one of the best metering systems I have ever seen for a camera. I never bracket my shots on AE and I always get negatives that are either dead on or very close to being dead on. Some of the best negs I have ever shot have come from this camera. Of course it does have a manual mode but I rarely ever have to use it as again the meter is just outstanding in this camera.

Another great thing about this system is how small and light it is. The lenses are actually quite small, especially compared to 35mm glass or even other medium format camera's. You can pack this entire system, the body and all 6 lenses, into a relatively small bag. you would be lucky to get a 35 body and 2 normal sized lenses into a similar sized bag. This is actually one of my favorite aspects to this system.

This camera is basically the exact opposite of shooting 4x5. While shooting 4x5 is slow and labor intensive, the Mamiya 7 is just super fast with almost no work to do whatsoever except composing the frame and shooting. Again this camera does have a manual mode so you can slow things down if you want to but I like just being able to shoot without worrying about anything. Its just a nice break from shooting 4x5. The whole size issue is just another aspect of this system that is basically like the exact opposite of shooting 4x5. Shooting 4x5 requires multiple large sized cases and shooting with a 100% complete Mamiya 7 system requires just 1 small to mid sized bag.

The bottom line - The Mamiya 7 is easily one of the best camera systems I have ever used or owned. Its lightweight, super fast, is small enough to carry the whole system around in a small bag, has outstanding metering, and has super super sharp lenses. In regards to medium format, it is easily my camera of choice when I am shooting portraiture, documentary or snapshot style shots. This is a system that I hope Mamiya continues to support for many years to come.

5 Stars and then some!!

Opteka High Definition 500mm / 1000mm f/8 Preset Telephoto Lens for Nikon Digital & Film SLR Cameras Review

I have seen much debate in the reviews of this lens (which I have also seen branded as Phoenix/Samyang/Rokinon), so I figured I'd throw my $.02 in. I've just recently gotten into photography as a hobby and I'm still learning the very basics of ISO, aperture, shutter speed, etc. and how they all interact, but was looking for an affordable way to get some decent shots of the moon with my newly purchased Nikon D3100. After doing some research, I came across this lens. I was skeptical because half of the reviews (mostly posted by pro-level photogs with plenty of cash to burn) gave horrible ratings because of the low quality of the glass. But was encouraged by the amateur level guys (and girls) who said if you know what you're doing you can get some decent results. There were also a few users who gave bad reviews because the lens "did not work with their camera" or were getting a "no lens attached" error - this lens does not contain any electronics, so everything must be shot in MANUAL mode - If you are looking for auto focus and metering, this is not the lens for you. So, I figured for just about $100, I'd take my chances. And I must say I'm pretty happy with the results - you can see a couple of the shots in the user images. Granted there is some noticeable chromatic aberration, I'm happy with the results so far. And I'm looking forward to using it in the daytime.

Oh, and 47th Street Photo is a great merchant!

Pentax GPS Unit O-GPS1 Hotshoe Mounted Accessory GPS Unit for Pentax K-5, K-r Review

I like to know exactly where I took my pictures as I mainly take landscape shots. With this attached, I get the exact location, the altitude, and the direction I was facing when the shot was taken, recorded and attached directly to the photo. So far, it seems to be right on or at least as accurate as the pixel resolution.

For the compass, you only have to calibrate it once for the direction between magnetic north and true north to be corrected. If you move longitudinally a good distance, you might have to calibrate it again, but it's not something that needs to be done for every shot.

The GPS acquires the satellites fairly quickly. With an open sky on a dry winter day, I got the 3D (4 satellites) reading in under a minute. The EXIF data recorded that I actually had 8.

The instruction manual and waypoint (destination) instructions leave a bit to be desired. The default file let's you find your way to Pentax offices around the world that you're probably never going to use. However, the sample file does give you the format. There are two ways you can set up waypoints. One is to take the lat-long from a photo and save it to the file. You can save up to 40 waypoints in one file this way. You can have 3 separate waypoint files giving you a total of 120 waypoints if you want.

The second way is to manually edit one of the 3 files that you've saved to your SD card. All three files are in the \GPS\DATA1\ folder on your SD card. The files have to be the names GPS_DAT1.TXT, GPS_DAT2.TXT, or GPS_DAT3.TXT. The camera won't read any other names. The waypoints are in DD (Decimal Degrees) in the following format:

TITLE= GPSDATAPentax [you give this name when saving]

DATA= PENTAX_Itabashi JP, N35.765182, E139.691208
DATA= PENTAX_Shinjuku JP, N35.691746, E139.695465
DATA= PENTAX_Osaka JP, N34.676910, E135.507095

If you have some waypoints from another GPS you would have to convert them in Notepad to this format, save them to the folder on the card, and then open them in the menu of the K-r. By selecting one of the 40 (max) you can then use the camera LCD screen to navigate to that waypoint (destination).

The Astrotracer function will use the anti-shake of the sensor to become a built-in equatorial mount. It only works in Bulb mode, and you'd better reset your auto-off function to off. You should also calibrate your compass before use to give it the greatest precision. Focus should be MF and you should check the focus as some lenses aren't in focus if just set on infinity. There is a maximum trace duration, which changes with the focal length lens used (longer lens = shorter exposure availability). The anti-shake function on the sensor only has so much movement it's capable of. Astrotracer can only be used with the K-r and K-5; it will not work with the 645D.

You can't use any flash while this unit is attached; it would block the built in flash from rising and of course, the hot shoe is already filled.

To use this GPS, you have to upgrade your cameras firmware to version 1.11. You can download this from Pentax and follow the instructions. It only takes a couple of minutes. The upgrade gives you the GPS menu items and some extra places in your photo's EXIF header files for the new data to be recorded.

I really like this unit. Before I got it I had to carry a GPS, take readings as I took pictures, and then use RoboGeo to write the information to the EXIF headers of the pictures. Now it's done when I take the picture. For me, the price was worth it. It doesn't replace a Trimble, but it's a lot smaller and saves post-processing time on photos.

77mm Fader ND Mark II Review

ND filters reduce the amount of light that gets to your lens. They let you shoot at a slow speed in daylight so you can capture movement of water or people against a fixed background, for example, or at night when you want to capture the movement of lights on cars, etc. You can buy ND filters of various strengths, or buy a
variable ND filter that gives you a wide range of adjustment

Light Craft's Fader ND filter is the variable type. This is a lower cost alternative to Singh Ray variable ND filters. I can't make a direct comparison with Singh Ray products, but I did run the Light Craft Fader through some tests on a Canon 5D Mark II with a 24-105mm lens and it's certainly satisfactory - designed well and made well. There was no loss of sharpness, based on comparing images shot with no filter and about a dozen images shot with the Fader filter at various degrees of ND. The filter shifts color slightly in the warm direction. It's not hard to compensate for this on your computer, but it's probably a good idea to take a shot without the filter so you have a baseline for making adjustments. Adjusting is easiest if you shoot in RAW, because you can reduce the color temperature slightly as a first step in processing.

The filter consists of two polarizing filers mounted in a ring so that the outer filter can be rotated. That allows you to vary the degree of density from about 2 stops to about 9 stops. The inner ring is the same size as your lens threads. Light Craft puts a slightly larger diameter filter into the outer ring to reduce the risk of vignetting. The 77mm Fader has an 82 mm outer filter and there was no vignetting with my 24 -105 mm lens set at 24 mm. The filter comes in a plastic case and it's supplied with an 82mm lens cap because the maker realizes that the cap from your lens won't fit the larger diameter outer ring. Another nice touch is that the outer ring is threaded in case you want to attach another filter. There's a small leaflet in the case with instructions written in perfect English that explains that the amount of increased density available varies depending on the focal length of your lens. On a very wide angle lens, you can't use the full 9 stop potential. With my lens set at 24 mm and the filter set for maxium density, the vertical edges of the frame are darkened more than the center. You can see the effect in your viewfinder especially if you use Live View, so it's not hard to avoid, and it the limitation vanishes as the focal length increases. I could get about 5 stops of density at 24mm and the full 9-stop effect was available at 50mm without any unevenness across the frame.
