Nikon Sport Optics 7543 MONARCH 5 10x42 Binocular - Black Review

Coming from a cheap pair of decade old Bushnells, these Monarchs were an incredible experience for me. After testing them against other brands several times in the store I decided to take the chance and purchase them. I have not been disappointed.

After the purchase I began to wonder if I had the best bino for "bucks." I read many good reviews about the Vortex brand and felt like I may have not made the right decision. I was really concerned that the less expensive Vortex Diamond Backs were better. I decided to end the torment and purchase the Vortex Diamond Back Binos and field test them side by side against the Monarchs.

I took both pair outside near dusk and "birded" for a little while. Because of the comfort offered by Vortex's touted warranty, I was really rooting for the Vortex. However, the Monarch's clarity was significantly superior to the Diamond Back 10X42's. The Monarch's focused more easily, the hinge pivot was smoother and the over all field of view was better. I wear eye-glasses and the eye relief of the Nikons was a bit better than the Vortex Diamond Backs. In the low light conditions the Nikons edged out the Vortex. When viewing birds on telephone wires I noticed that linear details were more defined with the Monarchs. Though the weight of the binos were comparable and comfortable, the Nikons just felt better in my hands than the Diamond Backs. So the Nikons won hands down.

At the present there is about a $70 difference in the Monarch 5's and the Diamond Backs. I feel like I am getting that much more quality for the added price in the Nikons.

Vortex seems to have somewhat of a cult following (well deserved) and it really swayed me at first. Yet, after this field test I'll stick with Nikon in this price range.

Of course, what makes binoculars good is a personal preference. One really needs to test a bino to see if it works for them. For me, I'll go with the Nikon Monarch 5.

UPDATE: I recently purchased the Vortex Talon HD 10X42 Binoculars and compared them to my Nikon Monarch 5 binos. It was a very close competition. In the end, the Talons win in the clarity department. When looking at the moon or birds, the Vortex Talons had a slight advantage over the Monarch 5s. Moon craters were a bit clearer and markings on the birds were slightly more defined. The Nikons still felt better in the hand and are lighter by several ounces. I really like the Talons feel and overall quality, but I am even more impressed with my Monarchs now. They really gave the Talons, which have ED glass, a tight comparison.

Sony DCR-HC26 MiniDV Digital Handycam Camcorder with 20x Optical Zoom Review

This is a fantastic camcorder, I've had it for 6 months and have played with it a ton. We bought this camera as a replacement for our 8 year old Samsung Hi-8 camera. The first thing that astonished me was the size difference between the two cameras! The Sony HC26 was 1/4 the size when compared to the outdated (but well performing) dinosaur Samsung. We paid more 8 years ago for the Samsung Hi-8 than we paid for this outperforming, master of technology, the Sony HC26! I was so impressed by the level of improvements in technology and the space and compactness, I instantly was very happy with this camcorder. I was hesitant about the touch screen controls, but have now fallen in love with that feature. It has enough features for the average user, it's a great camera for home use. If you're not "averagely technological" to master the programmed settings, an "easy button" located on the inside controls when you open your viewing screen, makes a pro out of ANY new camera operator. My seven year old is able to operate the camera, and do quite a good job at it, so if that's not user friendly, I don't know what is! We compared it to the Panasonic, JVC, and Canon, but knowing that we had no need for the still camera, this was the best choice for us. It's perfectly hand sized, buttons are easily reached to the "blind eye," the zoom is awesome at 20 optical zoom and placed right under your right index finger, other models have the button placed awkwardly. Despite other reviewer comments, I detect no "noise" from the zoom even after reviewing the footage in playback. The best-selling feature on this camera is the impressive nightshot when compared to similar cameras under $500. It films in real time with a black and white image and really captures your subject clearly and brightly. No other camera came close to the image quality with the nightshot feature, most were too dark to distinguish your subject. The nightshot really only works up to about 5 feet away even though they claim up to 10 feet. The Carl Zeiss Lens captures vivid colors and crisp images and the sound quality is very good. If your wanting quality picture and sound, definately go with this mini DV tape Sony Handycam 26 camcorder! Just a note, the technology isn't quite "there" yet for the disc recorders, you compromise on sound and picture quality by using the disc camcorders. This is a superior camcorder for the price! The fire-wire doesn't come with the camcorder package, but is needed to download video.

UPDATED NOTE: 2006 CONSUMER REPORTS BUYING QUIDE gives the Sony DCR HandyCam high marks as follows: picture quality-very good, ease of use-good, image stabilizer-excellent, audio quality-good, battery life-80 minutes. I thought it was interesting that they rated the JVC GR-DF450, the Canon Elura 85, and the Panasonic GS250 with FAIR audio quality, and all of these cameras are considerably more expensive but most competive with the Handycam. Of all the digital camcorders reviewed, the Sony Handycam outperformed and was the most affordable too!

HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Product Description

We've done our popular Orion StarBlast 4.5 Astro Beginner Telescope one better. The Orion-designed StarBlast 6 Astro Telescope takes the same compact, wide-field, user-friendly concept and expands on it, literally. The StarBlast 6 boasts fully 73% more light-gathering area than its smaller counterpart. Yet the scope is still highly portable, weighing only 23.5 lbs., and comes with the base fully assembled in the box! The StarBlast 6's 150mm (5.9") f/5.0 parabolic mirror provides ample aperture to reveal the planets and deep-sky gems in wonderful detail. Its wide field of view makes finding and tracking objects easier than with longer focal-length telescopes, which makes it a superb beginner telescope -- for all ages. It also would make a terrific grab-and-go second telescope for more experienced stargazers. Non-stick (PTFE) bearings and adjustable altitude tension on the base ensure smooth maneuvering of the StarBlast 6. Keep the included Sirius Plossl eyepieces at the ready in the convenient three-hole eyepiece rack. Two handle cutouts in the base allow easy lifting and transporting of the telescope. Set it on the ground or even on a small table or the hood of your car, and enjoy the view! The Orion StarBlast 6 isn't just a masterfully engineered, uncomplicated, and affordable telescope for the whole family - it's also a blast! One-year limited warranty.

Orion 10016 StarBlast 6 Astro Reflector Telescope Review

Amsteur astronomers consider his a small starting scope. Yet the box on my doorstep was HUGE. Unpacking revealed an inner box, inside which smaller boxes and the optical tube packed in plastic and foam protective ends. A very thorough packaging job. Putting the scope together was a breeze. Took me about 20 minutes. Now I needed to align the red dot finder and collimate the optics. But outside it was getting dark. I couldn't resist the temptation to put the scope outside in the back garden and aim for Saturn. The red dot finder wasn't aligned yet, but it is easy to aim this telescope. This is thanks to the fast (f/5) optics in combination with the 25 mm eyepiece, which gives the StarBlast6 a field-of-view much larger than almost any other scope. I put the 2x Barlow (not included in the package, you have to order separately) in... et voila: Saturn with an undeniable ring. When I put in the 10mm the ring was very clearly visible and separated from the planet itself. A great view. And all of this within 10 minutes after deciding to put the scope in my backyard, and without any attempts to collimate the scope. And... despite an amount of light pollution (I live in Houston well within the 610) unlikely to be exceeded in any other location.

The StarBlast6 nicely combines portability with a decent aperture. You can easily lift up the scope and walk a few hundred yards with it. For comfortable viewing, however, a small table comes in handy. When traveling to a dark site your car hood will likely work ok as well. The scope with tube directed straight up is just small enough to fit in a backseat of a standard car (buckle up the scope and you are ready to go). Those who want a real grab-n-go experience are probably better of with a StarBlast 4.5 or (an even smaller) GoScope. Those who are not bothered by some more weight and a larger volume can get a better bang for the buck with an 8" Dobsonian. For me the StarBlast6 is just fine. The right size and enough aperture for some nice views on the moon, the planets, and many deep sky objects. The short length of the scope is realized by having a fast primary mirror. This gives a very nice field of view approaching that of larger binoculars. At the same time the 10 mm eyepiece (in particular when combined with a Barlow) gives the opportunity for decent planet viewing.

Another advantage of the short tube is that collimation of the optics is really easy. When looking through the collimation eyepiece, you can easily reach the collimation bolts at the primary mirror. So no need to purchase a laser collimator. Also worth mentioning is the fact that the ring mounting of the optical tube allows the tube to rotate around its axis. This effectively makes the eyepiece position adjustable for comfortable viewing.

All-in-all an easy to use relatively compact beginners scope that yields great views ranging from stunning wideviews to decent planet views. Buy a smaller scope (or a 15x70 binocular with tripod) if portability is key. Buy a larger Dobsonian if portability is less important. Buy this one if you want a nice compromise between portability and good views.

HP Scanjet L2706ABGJ 7000 Sheet-Feed Scanner Review

Up until now, I had always relied on flatbed scanners with an ADF so that I could scan book pages, photographs, magazines, as well as reams of business documents. But the ADF units on these combination devices often jammed and have proven over the years to lack durability. Now that I live in a pure digital photo world, most of my scanning is documents for which a page scanner is preferable to a flatbed. Now I just keep a simple, inexpensive lightweight flatbed scanner (Canon CanoScan LiDE 210) under my desk for the occasional job that still requires a flatbed and rely on a new HP7000 document scanner most of the time. A document scanner benefits from straight paper feeds that are fast, duplex, and rarely jam (and are much easier to deal with in the event there is a jam). I have had a reasonably good prior experience with the HP6000 document scanner in a office setting. The HP 7000 is a significant step up. It is a very compact, handsome machine and is a very fast scanner, even when scanning duplex in color. It scans much faster and much more reliably than my former HP8350 flatbed/ADF combination unit and even better than the HP6000. The paper feed has proven to be both reliable and versatile. It has no problem handling those narrow, thin thermal receipts so commonly issued by retail establishements or a legal sized stack of note pages. It is very simple to open the scanner to remove a sheet of paper that has jammed (which so far has been very rare) and just as easy to access the rollers for cleaning or replacement (neither of which I am likely to need to do for some time).

All of this is great, but the user interface is the icing on the cake. Most scans can be initiated on the scanner by a simple selection of a scanning mode from a menu system followed by pressing either the simplex or the duplex scan button on the face of the scanner. This will automatically launch HP's much improved smart scanning software and execute the scan. Some additional adjustments to the scanned image can be done in the software if desired (such as rotating pages, deleting selected pages, adding more pages) and then the document is saved to where you have chosen in the configuration software. The unit comes preconfigured with convenient scanning profiles, but you can customize these and add your own using the provided software, which will then appear as choices in the selection menu on the scanner. There is also a button to launch the scanner configuration tool. Scans can also be initiated from within third party software such as Adobe Acrobat or Paperport using TWAIN or WIA drivers. This is by far the best scanning solution I have yet encountered.

The output tray has extensions to keep pages from falling off the end or to the side. These are a bit flimsy so most of the time, I just keep the main output tray extended about 3/4 of the way. I only extend it all the way out and unfold the side and end catches when scanning a larger stack of full sized documents (letter or legal pages).

Bottom line: A top notch document scanner that is well worth its price. A joy to use.
